why neocities?

Rant about tiktok

Never been good at social media! Other than the fact I never knew how portray myself online in the 'correct' way, I realized I was spending a WHOLE LOT of time just scrolling away (mostly on tiktok). And I never walked away from it feeling particularly good: I'd see a funny, lighthearted post every once in a while, sure. In my case, though, Such posts weren't all that easy to come across. I guess that's just what THE ALGORITHM decided.

Mostly, it was just some rando sharing their perspective on the hot topic of the day--whether it be current events, or random internet drama. THE ALGORITHM kept showing me this stuff, and I kept scrolling in the hopes that I'd eventually get a good chuckle--which is exactly how it's supposed to work!

It was at that point I realized that I was like a textbook example of how these infinite-scrolling social media sites keep people hooked. I finally admitted to myself that tiktok was just making me feel kind of bad all the time, and took the app off my phone.

I stopped using tiktok in july (? it was definitely summer) 2022. I'm not gonna lie and say I got a new hobby or touched a lot of grass, but removing that one app from my rotation has made a very noticable difference in my overall mood. It's wild, and actually a little embarassing (the boomers were right! it was the damn phones!)

THE POINT

Anyways, I didn't make a neocities site until like a week ago (june 30 2023) because TBH I didn't know it was a thing. Last week I saw that someone I follow on tumblr has a personal site, and I was like 'that's so fucking cool. I want one.' And here we are!

Like many, I love falling down internet rabbitholes. Except with neocities, I get to glimpse into the minds of random people. It's not curated, they're not trying to attract an audience, I'll just happen to stumble across someone else's WHOLE ASS WEBSITE. Genuinely my favorite thing is finding a personal website run by someone who loves to talk about themselves. I get to see all the things that they think make them who they are. And then i get to poke aroud their html for cool new layout ideas. It's the best, but you already knew that.

And in turn, I can do pretty much anything with this space--limited only by my knowledge of css.

The first week of this site's existence, it was kind of just a ripoff of a couple other sites I came across and thought were cool.

Now that I've found my footing, this site is evolving to be more representative of who I am.
